Applications are invited for the post of a full-time Consultants to join the Department of Stroke Medicine at out Trust. This is a new post which have arisen as a result of service development. You would be joining an enthusiastic and experienced stroke specialist multidisciplinary team.

The stroke service is an all-inclusive model covering hyper-acute, acute and rehabilitation services, as well as the Early Supported Discharge (ESD) team for stroke. All of these are under the same management team, sharing team members, clinical protocols and governing structures.

We admit approximately 500 stroke patients annually and was recently been given an A rating by the Sentinel Stroke National Audit Programme (SSNAP) . This puts us in the top 29 of 178 Trusts nationally.

Research is encouraged within the stroke service and is supported by a full time stroke research nurse. The portfolio of trials is wide. In ENCHANTED trial of low versus standard dose thrombolysis the SFH stroke service achieved the fastest mean door-to-needle time for recruiting centres across the world.

Our site provides excellent facilities - the stroke wards consist of a fully-monitored, four bedded hyper-acute area and a 34 bedded acute and rehabilitation unit, which has an integral therapy gym and ADL assessment and rehabilitation area. Therapy services run seven days per week.

The thrombolysis service runs 24/7 and is supported by a telemedicine model shared with neighbouring Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH). Referrals are made from the ambulance service directly to the stroke unit and a stroke response nurse (NIHSS trained) is available at all times to assess new stroke referrals (including thrombolysis cases) and works closely with the Consultant Stroke Physicians.

The on-call commitment is 1:7 which includes out of hours thrombolysis and weekend daytime cover of the stroke unit and the three acute/subacute geriatric wards. There is no obligation to join the acute medical on call rota although this could be explored according to your experience and preferences.

On average 40% of stroke patients admitted to the unit are transferred to the Early Supported Discharge team which receives weekly sessional Consultant input.

TIA clinics run five days per week on the KMH site (with a weekend service being provided at Nottingham) and are fully supported by dedicated radiology and imaging teams. Neuroimaging meetings are held weekly to discuss stroke and TIA patients.

Joint operational and Clinical Governance structures enable close partnership working with neighbouring NUH with whom we share a Partnership Board. Junior doctors rotate from Nottingham and North Trent and medical students from Nottingham and Derby are regularly attached to the service.

Full registration with Specialist Registration and a license to practice with the GMC is essential. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from date of interview or eligibility for specialist registration (CESR).The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team is also essential.
